The Russo Brothers turned away for Marvel’s Avengers 5?

July 2, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Is Marvel Studios done with the Russo brothers? Rumors are swirling that the filmmaker duo that brought to life Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and the second highest-grossing film ever, Avengers: Endgame, have yet to be wanted back at Marvel. Is it the fault of the directing duo, or does Marvel not want to return to their glory days?

Well, a report from Jeff Sneider at The Hot Mic implies that the filmmakers offered to direct the next Avengers film but were reportedly turned down. Why is not 100% certain, but money could be an issue.

The Julius Onah-directed Captain America: Brave New World is currently in a reworking phase, with its $275 million budget adding around $75-100 million. Due to that, Marvel is looking to tighten its wallet, and Bob Iger is getting more stern about how divisions are run.

And with no shade thrown at the Russos, the filmmakers aren’t known for being frugal. With these blockbusters needing less money put on them, the excess we once saw would not work. The bold ideas of the filmmaking brothers could help bring hardcore fans back in but to the detriment of saving money. For example, their Netflix film The Gray Man came in around $200 million to make, while the Citadel spy series cost a reported $50 million per episode.

With the current production slate getting reworked, like Blade‘s production issues and various Disney+ projects going on hold, Marvel Studios has some time. The report notes that Marvel Studios aims to shoot the currently-untitled Avengers 5 early next year, while recent reports have suggested that Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy has been in talks with Marvel about the vacant position.

Who do you want to see stepping into the director’s chair for the next Avengers movie? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
