Sydney Sweeney to join Glen Powell in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man?

August 5, 2024 by Gary Collinson

With Edgar Wright confirmed to direct The Running Man with Glen Powell in the lead, it seems the long-gestating Stephen King adaptation is now about to see Powell’s Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney boarding the project for a reunion between the two fast-rising stars.

According to a report by DanielRPK, Euphoria and Madame Web star Sweeney is wanted for the female lead in the film, which is set to begin production in London in October. Wright will direct the film from a script he’s written with regular collaborator Michael Bacall, with the duo penning a take believed to be more in line with the original Stephen King/Richard Bachman novel, as opposed to the cult 1987 Arnold Schwarzennegger action film.

Should Sweeney sign on for The Running Man, not only will it mark a reunion with Powell, but it will also see the actress working with Edgar Wright ahead of their Barbarella remake, which both are attached to for Sony Pictures.

Powell and Sweeney are certainly hot property in Hollywood right now, with Anyone But You proving a smash hit worldwide with $220 million at the box office; Powell has since followed this up with Richard Linklater’s Hit Man and another box office hit in Twisters, while Sweeney has shrugged off her association with Sony’s Madame Web with the horror hit Immaculate.

Both have also been adding new prestige projects to their upcoming slate at a rapid rate this year, with Powell linked to J.J. Abrams’ next film alongside a remake of Heaven Can Wait, and Sweeney set to play trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in a biopic from David Michôd, as well as starring alongside Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby and Jude Law in Ron Howard’s Eden.
