Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie set for another writer shake-up

October 28, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Disney’s efforts to launch a New Jedi Order seem to be going about as well as Luke Skywalker’s, as Variety has revealed that the upcoming Daisy Ridley-led Star Wars film set post-The Rise of Skywalker is looking at another writer shake-up.

As per the trade, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has exited the project, having originally came on board back in March of last year to replace writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Lucasfilm is said to be actively looking for a replacement writer, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) remains on board to direct.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the news of Knight’s departure, lead actress Daisy Ridley spoke to The Playlist and seemingly downplayed any potential creative issues on the project, stating: “We don’t have a date. I think the creative process is one that is really a journey. And I’m really genuinely excited. And I have said I’m very excited, but I really do mean I’m excited about what’s coming. And I think we really have the luxury of making sure that this is right. So when everything is ready to go, we will be going, and it’s very—yeah, it’s good.”

The Star Wars: New Jedi Order project was one of three Star Wars movies officially announced by Disney and Lucasfilm during last year’s Star Wars Celebration alongside a “Dawn of the Jedi” movie from James Mangold and a “cinematic event” movie from Dave Filoni that will cross over between the various Mandoverse shows on Disney+. So far, we’ve heard little in the way of news on either of those, but the subsequently-announced The Mandalorian & Grogu movie from Jon Favreau has been set for May 22nd 2026.
