Colin Farrell is a gambler on the run in Ballad of a Small Player trailer

August 19, 2025 by Amie Cranswick

Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Ballad of a Small Player, director Edward Berger’s (All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave) upcoming adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s novel of the same name.

The psychological thriller stars Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a high-stakes gambler who spends the little money he has left drinking on the casino floors of Macau, but when his past catches up with him as a private investigator (Tilda Swinton) tracks him down, he is offered a lifeline by a casino employee (Fala Chen) with her own secrets. Check out the trailer below…

Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell) is laying low in Macau – spending his days and nights on the casino floors, drinking heavily and gambling what little money he has left. Struggling to keep up with his fast-rising debts, he is offered a lifeline by the mysterious Dao Ming (Fala Chen), a casino employee with secrets of her own.

However, in hot pursuit is Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) – a private investigator ready to confront Doyle with what he is running from. As Doyle tries to climb to salvation, the confines of reality start to close in.

Ballad of a Small Player is set for a theatrical release on October 17th before arriving on Netflix on October 29th.
