UPDATE: Wolverine 3 to be titled Weapon X

June 12, 2016 by Justin Cook

Warning: the following article features spoilers for X-Men: Apocalypse…

Over the past few months, many fans have been lead to believe that Hugh Jackman’s third and final Wolverine solo film would be an adaptation of one of the most popular comic book storylines involving the character, Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan. However, if the post-credits scene for the recently released X-Men: Apocalypse hinted at anything, it’s that the next Wolverine installment may instead be built around the Essex Corporation and Weapon X.

Despite being in production currently, Wolverine 3 still doesn’t have an official title, which has only added to fans’ speculation about what story the movie will be telling, but now, sources close to Gamezone have revealed to the site that the movie will be called Weapon X.

Obviously, the news should be taken with a grain of salt, especially because many rumoured titles end up being false, but on the other hand, the title would certainly make sense. It does seem a bit strange that Fox would leave the name of one of their most well-known characters out of the title as one would think that calling it something along the lines of Wolverine: Weapon X would attract more moviegoers, but once again, those interested will just have to wait until the studio reveals the official title for a confirmation.

Weapon X is a government genetic research facility project that plays a key part in Wolverine’s origin story, as shown in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In Apocalypse, Jackman makes an appearance as Weapon X for a fairly short amount of time.

Lastly, the report also states that a title, poster and footage will be revealed at this July’s San Diego Comic-Con.

UPDATE: It looks Wolverine: Weapon X may be the title, as 20th Century Fox has registered the domain name WolverineWeaponX.com.

Wolverine 3 is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal.

Wolverine 3 is set for release on March 3rd, 2017.
