Kurt Russell talks Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and its “complex story”

September 16, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be introducing a number of new faces when it hits cinemas this coming May, not least Kurt Russell as Star-Lord’s father, Ego the Living Planet. During an interview with Collider to promote the upcoming release of his new film Deepwater Horizon, Russell has shared a few words about joining the sequel, as well as discussing its “complex story” about human issues and relationships (or half-human/half-planet issues and relationships).

“I was really impressed that all of the people on the set were so excited because they felt this was so much stronger than the first one, that they really knew what they were doing and the story itself was strong,” said Russell. “That pervaded the set. James and everybody else felt like ‘We got our sea legs on the first one, now we can really go.”

“I was impressed with the stuff that I saw at Comic-Con, but they didn’t show you everything [laughs],” he continued. “It’s a very complex story, and they really get into it. This is going to be one of the more—probably for Marvel, it’s more connected to human issues, family issues, parental issues, and issues that sons and daughters have with their moms and dads and their family tree, where they come from. I just think it’s going to be an interesting— Peter’s character in this one, he’s got dilemmas and he’s got decisions to make that are not just about whether to save that thing or that person. This is about finding out who you are, where you come from, and where you’re going.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
