Doug Liman says Dark Universe will “turn the comic book genre on its head”

October 28, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last month, Warner Bros.’ summoned its Justice League Dark movie Dark Universe out of development hell, enlisting Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman to bring the supernatural heroes of the DC universe to the big screen.

During an interview with IGN, Liman has explained what drew him to the project, and how he’s aiming to “turn the comic book genre on its head” with an “unconventional” take on the material:

“I mean first of all, I love those characters, and I love Warner Bros., and I love [producer] Scott Rudin, and it’s – and you know, I get asked to come in and do things that are ‘unconventional,'” said Liman. “If people want conventional, they don’t come to me. It’s why doing [the VR series] Invisible was like right up my alley — because how can you be conventional when there aren’t even conventions that exist? And so you know when Warner Bros. wants to sort of turn the comic book genre on its head, they call me.”

Dark Universe is currently without a set release date, but we do know that Liman will be working from original director Guillermo del Toro’s screenplay.
