Disney hires Shrek 2 writers for the Enchanted sequel

July 2, 2014 by James Garcia

Disney’s live-action fairytale satire Enchanted came out seven years ago, to widespread acclaim and a whopping $340 million at the global box office. Talk of a follow-up has been going on for years, but the studio only started showing serious intentions on making it happen earlier this year, when they hired The Guilt Trip director Anne Fletcher to take the helm.

According to Deadline, Shrek 2 and The Smurfs writers J. David Stem and David N. Weiss have been brought on board to pen the new screenplay, and though the stars of the first film haven’t been announced yet, they are likely to reprise their roles.

Directed by Kevin Lima, Enchanted starred Amy Adams as Giselle, a Disney princess who gets banished from her animated fantasy world by an evil queen and must fend for herself in live-action modern day Manhattan. Adams was joined by James Marsden (X-Men), Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) and Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy).

With no plot details given, we’ll just have to wait and see what kind of story Stem and Weiss cook up for Giselle this time around. Presumably, the film will once again take place in our live-action reality, and will further explore classic fairytale tropes in smart, satirical ways.

We’ll have more updates on Enchanted 2 as soon as more news becomes available.
