Gillian Anderson confirms that new season of The X-Files will be her last

January 1, 2018 by Gary Collinson

The X-Files makes its return this week for its eleventh season, and after teasing back in October that this could be her last, actress Gillian Anderson has now confirmed to TV Guide that she has decided to call time on her role as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully.

“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me,” said Anderson. “I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement…because my understanding was that this was a single season.”

Despite Anderson’s decision, X-Files creator Chris Carter has suggested that the show could continue beyond this eleventh season, stating that: “There are a lot more X-Files stories to tell. Whether we get to tell them is a question mark.”

Presumably, another question mark is whether people would want to see more X-Files stories without Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully.

The new season of The X-Files sees the return of David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose, while new additions include Barbara Hershey and Brian Huskey. It is scheduled to premiere on FOX on January 3rd.
