Rumour: Marvel planning an Eternals movie for Phase Four

April 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With all eyes on Avengers: Infinity War and the remaining instalments of Phase Three leading up to next year’s Avengers 4, Marvel Studios has remained very coy when it comes to its plans for Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We know that it will kick off with Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, and include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and – presumably – Black Panther 2, as well as having an increased emphasis on the cosmic side of the MCU. And, if a new rumour is to be believed, that cosmic focus could include an Eternals movie.

According to a report at MCUCosmic, “multiple sources” have confirmed that Marvel is looking to launch The Eternals as a new franchise post-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and “the wheels are already in motion to find Marvel’s new team of heroes”.

Created by Jack Kirby and debuting in 1976, The Eternals were created by the Celestials as an evolutionary offshoot of humanity to serve as the defenders of Earth. Characters who featured as part of the Eternals include Kronos, Gilgamesh, Starfox, Sersi and Ikaris.

Apparently the recent success of Thor: Ragnarok convinced Marvel to move forward with The Eternals, as well as the news that Warner Bros. and DC Films have tapped Ava DuVernay to adapt another of Kirby’s creations, New Gods.

At the moment, we have nothing in the way of confirmation to suggest this rumour is correct, but Guardians director James Gunn has previously confirmed that Marvel is working on a number of cosmic scripts, so an Eternals movie is certainly within the realm possibility.

Are you excited about the prospect of an Eternals movie? What other cosmic characters would you like to see during Phase Four? Let us know in the comments below…
