Benedict Cumberbatch calls Martin Freeman’s Sherlock fan criticism “pathetic”

April 29, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month, Martin Freeman hit out at a section of the Sherlock fan base, stating that he felt that their high expectations had sucked the fun out of making the show and that his involvement was “not a thing to be enjoyed, it’s a thing of: ‘You better fucking do this, otherwise, you’re a cunt.'”

Well, it seems that’s not a viewpoint shared by his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who has called Freeman’s comments “pathetic” in an interview with The Telegraph.

“It’s pretty pathetic if that’s all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality,” said Cumberbatch. “What, because of expectations? I don’t know. I don’t necessarily agree with that … There’s a level of obsession where [the franchise] becomes [the fans’] even though we’re the ones making it. But I just don’t feel affected by that in the same way, I have to say.”

At this point, there’s been no word about a potential fifth series of Sherlock, and given the stars’ schedules, it seems unlikely that it will happen any time soon, if at all. Both actors can however be seen in theaters at present, and in Marvel movies too, with Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War and Freeman as Everett Ross in Black Panther.
