Dexter: Original Sin adds young Angel, LaGuerta and Masuka to cast

June 5, 2024 by Ricky Church

The Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has cast a group of actors to play young versions of characters from the original series. Joining the prequel is James Martinez (Love, Victor), Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love), Alex Shimizu (The Terror) and Reno Wilson (Fatal Attraction).

Dexter: Original Sin takes viewers back to Dexter Morgan’s early days as begins an internship at Miami Metro while beginning his secret career as a serial killer who targets criminals that escape justice.

Martinez will play Angel Batista, “an up-and-coming homicide detective who leads with his heart.” Batista was played by David Zayas in the original series and briefly reappeared in the limited sequel series Dexter: New Blood. He was one of Dexter’s best friends in the homicide department.

Milian will play Maria LaGuerta, “Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective.” Luna Lauren Velez portrayed her throughout Dexter where she was the precinct’s lead Lieutenant and later captain. She was a very ambitious officer and could often be manipulative as she worked her way up the ranks of the Maimi PD.

Shimizu will play Vince Masuka, “a forensic analyst who eagerly shares his expertise while relishing the chance to boss around his new intern, Dexter Morgan.” C.S. Lee played Masuka in the original series, depicted as one of Dexter’s best friends and harboured an attraction towards Dexter’s sister Debra.

Wilson will play an entirely new character named Bobby Watt, who will have been a longtime partner and confidant to Dexter’s father Harry Morgan, played in the prequel by Christian Slater.

The four join a cast that include Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone) as Dexter, Molly Brown (Senior Year) as Debra and Slater as their father Harry. Dexter creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips is returning to serve as showrunner for Original Sin.

With this group of casting largely playing younger versions from the original Dexter, it begs the question if we’ll see any more characters we’re familiar with, such as Captain Matthews, Camilla, a young Ice Truck Killer or, most significantly, Doakes, the only detective to suspect Dexter of any criminal behaviour? We’ll have to wait and see for more news.

Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) in 1991 Miami, a student transitioning into a serial killer in training. When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter finds solace and understanding in Harry. As his only confidant, he teaches Dexter a Code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die—all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
