It seems that director Yorgos Lanthimos is set to reunite with The Favourite star Emma Stone and screenwriter Tony McNamara on his next project, a reimagining of the Frankenstein story entitled Poor Things.
Based on the novel of the same name from Alasdair Gray, Poor Things will see Stone portraying Bella Baxter, “a volatile, oversexed, emancipated woman and a female Frankenstein.” Here’s the book’s blurb, via Amazon:
What strange secret made rich, beautiful, tempestuous Bella Baxter irresistible to the poor Scottish medical student Archie McCandless? Was it her mysterious origin in the home of his monstrous friend Godwin Baxter, the genius whose voice could perforate eardrums? This story of true love and scientific daring whirls the reader from the private operating-theatres of late-Victorian Glasgow through aristocratic casinos, low-life Alexandria and a Parisian bordello, reaching an interrupted climax in a Scottish church.
The news comes by the way of The Film Stage, which cites a Production Weekly notice about a fall 2021 shoot, along with a listing on McNamara’s agency page which confirms his involvement.
