HBO Max passes on J.J. Abrams’ The Shining spin-off series Overlook

August 6, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

J.J. Abrams isn’t having much luck with his small screen Stephen King adaptations, because following the cancellations of Castle Rock and 11.22.63, HBO Max has now decided to pass on Bad Robot’s The Shining spin-off series Overlook.

One of three projects that Abrams was developing for the streaming service, alongside Justice League Dark and Duster, Overlook is a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s The Shining, which explores the untold, terrifying stories of the famous hotel. However, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that HBO Max have decided to pass at the development stage, allowing the project to find a new home, with Netflix reportedly leading the bidding.

Abrams will now turn his attention towards getting Demimonde off the ground at HBO, which will be the first show he has created for television since 2008’s criminally ignored Fox sci-fi Fringe. Abrams has written the show and will direct the pilot for Demimonde, which is described as an “epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama” that follows a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up being transported to another world amid a battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.”
