Audiences will be returning to Westeros for several more years as HBO has renewed both of its Game of Thrones prequels for additional seasons. House of the Dragon will return for a fourth season while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season ahead of its January series premiere.
The renewals were announced by HBO chairman Casey Bloys alongside first-look images of House of the Dragon‘s third season, which will premiere summer 2026, that you can view above and below. The fourth season will air in 2028 and is currently being written by showrunner Ryan Condal, who had previously stated the series would end after four seasons. However, Bloys suggested the fourth season may not be its last now.
“For all of [our] shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision,” Bloys said. “We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So, I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.”
House of the Dragon takes place over 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, following the Targaryen dynasty’s civil war for the Iron Throne that would have huge consequences for the future of Westeros. The series is led by Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel and Ewan Mitchell.
Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms marks the second spin-off of the Game of Thrones franchise and is set 70 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones. Starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, the series is based of George R.R. Martin’s novellas which follow the adventures of Duncan and his squire Egg, who keeps a mysterious secret as they travel across Westeros.
Unlike House of the Dragon which has had a two-year gap between seasons, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be airing its second season in 2027. This is due to the latter series’ smaller production compared to the former as Seven Kingdoms will consist of six half-house episodes instead of Dragons‘ lengthier episodes.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on January 18th, 2026 and House of the Dragon season three will premiere in the summer 2026.
