Mission: Impossible 7 may scrap Italy shoot

April 23, 2020 by Ricky Church

As uncertainty over the future of several productions continues to grow in the wake of the health crisis, Variety has reported Mission: Impossible 7 may scrap its planned shoot in Italy.

The Tom Cruise-led action film, with Christopher McQuirrie returning to direct his third Mission: Impossible film and the eighth installment of the franchise right after, was to have a long shoot in Italy before the country went on lockdown. It forced the film to go on an indefinite shutdown as the industry waits for the health crisis to end.

With no signs of slowing, Variety says “actors like Cruise may not be taking those trips to Italy. Insiders suspect that many productions that once eyed foreign locales will be reconfigured to film in the U.S. while travel restrictions remain in place. In the case of Mission: Impossible 7, the filmmakers are trying to decide whether or not to scrap the Italian leg of production or push that part of shooting back until fall when the virus may have subsided.” Even in the case of pushing the shoot back to the fall, however, there is uncertainty whether a second wave may come in the fall and winter. We’ll have to wait and see a bit longer how Cruise and McQuirrie decide to move forward.

Mission: Impossible 7 is set for release on July 23rd 2021, followed by Mission: Impossible 8 on August 25th 2022. Featuring in the cast are returning stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Henry Czerny, along with new additions Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Dark Pheonix), Hayley Atwell (Avengers: Endgame), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), and Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire).
