Russian Doll creator developing “female-centric” Star Wars series for Disney+

April 22, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Coming hot on the heels of the news that work is already underway on a third season of The Mandalorian, Variety is reporting that a new live-action Star Wars series is in development at Disney+.

Details on the project are being kept tightly under wraps, but it will be steered by Leslye Headland, the co-creator and showrunner of Netflix’s Russian Doll, and is described as “female-centric”.

With the recent casting of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano for the second season of The Mandalorian, and rumours that her role is being envisioned as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff series, it’s certainly possible that this new project could revolve around the fan-favourite character.

However, Variety’s report also suggests that Headland’s series will “take place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects”, which may well rule out Ahsoka, but perhaps opens the door for the rumoured Doctor Aphra project?

Whatever the subject, the new series joins a growing slate of Star Wars projects at Disney+, with The Mandalorian set to be joined by the upcoming Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi series in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

What do you make of this new project? Would you prefer to see a series based around Ahsoka Tano, Doctor Aphra, or another character entirely? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
