The Flintstones sequel series Bedrock gets series order, sets cast

March 11, 2023 by Ricky Church

One of animation’s most famous families is returning to TV as Fox has ordered Bedrock, a sequel series to The Flintstones that follows an adult Pebbles with Elizabeth Banks (Cocaine Bear) leading the cast and executive producing.

Bedrock “catches up with the Flintstone family two decades later, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”

The voice cast includes Banks as Pebbles, Stephen Root (Barry) as Fred, Amy Sedaris (The Mandalorian) as Wilma, Nicole Byer (Velma) as Betty, Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Barney and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) as Bamm-Bamm.

Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment are producing with Banks executive producing alongside Max Handelman from Brownstone Productions and Sam Register. Writing the series is Lindsay Kerns (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) and Lon Zimmet (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) with Kerns serving as a co-executive producer and Zimmet as an exec producer.

The Flintstones was introduced in 1960 and ran until 1966, becoming the first animated series to have a primetime TV slot from Hannah-Barbara. It was incredibly successful and popular and was the longest-running animated series for 30 years until The Simpsons overtook it. Its influence on animated series can still be felt as its format of following a middle-class family dealing with the daily struggles of work, family and society in comedic ways can be seen in The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and more, a fact the first Simpsons/Family Guy crossover made fun of for the many series that followed Flintstones. The Jetsons is even The Flintsones‘ futuristic counterpart which also came from Hannah-Barbara.

A live-action feature film of The Flintstones was made in 1994 which starred John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Elizabeth Perkins, Rosie O’Donnell, Halle Berry and Kyle MacLachlan.
