More than three years on from its intended release date, Zack Snyder fans got a brand new look at The Snyder Cut of Justice League yesterday with the arrival of the official trailer for the four-hour DC superhero epic ahead of its HBO Max premiere next month.
Will this be an improvement over the much-derided, Joss Whedon-directed theatrical cut (a.k.a. Josstice League)? An overblown train wreck of excess? We’ll find out next month, but in the meantime Flickering Myth’s EJ Moreno and Allen Christian sat down to discuss the new trailer in the latest episode of Flickering Myth Movie Chat.

Shaun Munro: The trailer pretty much compounds my feeling the film is going to be a grandiose mess. The visual effects look horrendous but I hope it’s at least less of a bland bore than the 2017 version. The four-hour runtime certainly has me nervous.
Matt Rodgers: I didn’t hate Justice League. It wasn’t an affront to cinema. It was a sporadically enjoyable mess with a little too much CGI vomit in the final third. This looks more of the same. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it on some level and then move on with my life.
EJ Moreno: So totally in love with the film, and I hope it can wash the taste of 2017’s movie out of my mouth. As a longtime DC fan and someone who admires Zack Snyder’s work, this feels like what we’ve been building towards. While I think the Joker scene at the end feels tacked on for a conversation starter (why not place it when Bats is talking bout the Knightmare?), I think it’s a decently cut trailer and offers up fans of this what they want. Love that it’s seemingly completely different from the 2017 version, a great exercise on how a single film with mostly the same shots can change when handled by other directors.
Tom Beasley: I actually thought the trailer looked pretty solid as far as chaotic, overwrought superhero carnage goes. It looks spectacularly self-indulgent, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun. Having said that, the Joker stuff can go jump off a cliff.
Villordsutch: I’m with Shaun. I can’t understand how, watching this mess, people are getting even more excited for Zack’s continuing DCEU dumpster fire. I’m even more confused for the fanfare at sticking in the most disliked Joker at the end!?
Ricky Church: I have been looking forward to seeing the Snyder Cut for a while as I enjoyed the theatrical cut on my very first watch, but quickly realized I wore rose-coloured glasses as I noticed more how much of a Frankenstein of a film it is. I have enjoyed most of Snyder’s past work and l, within his work in the DCU, I love Man of Steel and like BvS (Ultimate Cut that is) so I am going into the Snyder Cut with a fairly optimistic but open mind. However, I fully admit a 4-hour cut and most of the marketing thus far, such as the posters of broken film reels, are a bit self-indulgent (and don’t even get me started on the Snyder cult). That said, I am glad that this new version looks tonally and thematically consistent with MoS and BvS, making this feel much more like a complete trilogy. Whether I like it or not we’ll see in March, but I am interested in the final result.
