It may not have been the box office smash that Warner Bros. would have been hoping for (which, reportedly, has led to a major shakeup at DC Films), but Justice League has ticked off another milestone this weekend with the DC blockbuster passing the $600 million mark worldwide.
By close of play this weekend, Justice League has grossed $212.1 million domestically, and a further $401.3 million worldwide for a total of $613.4 million.
Initial reports had claimed that Justice League would need to bank around $650 million to break even, given its $300 million production budget plus hefty marketing costs. While that’s technically still possible, it will soon have to contend with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is sure to suck the life out of almost every other release over the Christmas period.
Should Justice League fall short of that figure, it would also remain the lowest earner of the DC Extended Universe, with 2013’s Man of Steel sitting on $668 million. For the time being, it’s also still the lowest grossing live-action superhero movie of the year behind Logan on $616.8 million.
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
