Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits $932 million worldwide as Incredibles 2 closes in on $650 million

July 1, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Universal’s blockbuster dinosaur sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom continued its dominance of the global box office this weekend, claiming first place in North America for the second week in a row with $60 million, and first place internationally for the fourth consecutive weekend with a further $56.1 million from 68 markets.

Globally, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has now amassed a mighty $932 million and will presumably reach the $1 billion mark this coming week, becoming the third movie to do so after Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther ($1.346 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.034 billion).

In doing so, it will also pass the $983.8 million haul of Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park, putting it in second place for the franchise behind 2015’s Jurassic World on $1.672 billion.

Meanwhile, in other box office news, Disney-Pixar’s Incredibles 2 pushed its global takings to $646.8 million. In the U.S., it currently sites on $439.7 million, second to Finding Dory ($486.3 million) in terms of Pixar’s highest earners. The superhero sequel is yet to open in many major international markets, and could well find itself pushing the $1 billion mark once its roll out is complete.

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sees J.A. Bayona directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum alongside newcomers Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger), Rafe Spall (Black Mirror), Justice Smith (The Get Down), Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs), James Cromwell (The Young Pope), Daniella Pineda (The Detour) and Geraldine Chaplin (A Monster Calls).
