Shazam! sequel will shoot next year, reveals Zachary Levi

June 24, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Shazam! may not have managed to replicate the runaway financial success of Aquaman, but given its modest budget (for a superhero movie, anyway) of $100 million, it proved to be a solid enough hit at the box office with $363 million to warrant a sequel.

It was revealed following the movie’s opening weekend that Shazam! screenwriter Henry Gayden was already on board to script a second instalment for Zachary Levi’s titular hero, and now Levi has revealed to the Associated Press (via CinemaBlend) that he expects filming on the movie to get underway in next year either in late spring or early summer.

The fact that WB and DC are looking to fast track a Shazam! sequel shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that its young cast is key to the story and the kid actors are sure to grow up quickly.

Should filming on Shazam! 2 actually get underway next year, it could well be joined by the long-rumoured Black Adam film, with Dwayne Johnson stating in April that he expects to be filming that project “in about a year” and The Rock’s Jungle Cruise helmer Jaume Collet-Serra signing on to direct. As for when we might see the movie(s), the studio already has The Batman and The Suicide Squad slated to land in 2021, so 2022 would seem a pretty good bet at this point.

Shazam sees Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, along with Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard, Adam Brody as Freddie Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield.
