Michael Shannon “didn’t think there was any other way to end” controversial Man of Steel fight

April 11, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The ending of the Superman and Zod fight in Man of Steel still divides fans to this day. Zack Snyder’s 2013 film shook how viewers saw the iconic character as we saw Superman snap the neck of Zod to save not only a family but the entire world. This moment was the real turning point of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the character and the whole DC Extended Universe.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend’s podcast ReelBlend, the team decided to ask guest Michael Shannon, promoting his upcoming film The Quarry, on if he thought that Zod’s death was unnecessary.

“No, I didn’t think there was any other way to end it, really,” he said. “I mean, Zod says it’s either me or you. I’m not gonna let you survive. I will kill you unless you kill me. And that seemed sufficiently Greek to me, you know?”

Shannon went on to say that even if he had issues with that scene, he’s not the type to ask to change what’s in the script:

“I’ve seen other actors that feel more comfortable kind of going in and screwing around with the script and the story. But I, I’ve never felt real comfortable with that unless there’s something that’s just glaringly nonsensical. I kinda keep my mouth shut, because I’m not a writer. I can’t write a screenplay to save my life. So I have a lot of respect for the script and, and I only go off it if I’m encouraged to by the director.”

No matter how fans feel about the situation, it seems like at least one half of the neck snap is fine with how the events took place.
