John Williams is scoring Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, his first TV series since 1985

February 18, 2022 by EJ Moreno

John Williams has scored nine Star Wars films across five decades, and he’s not done with the galaxy far, far away just yet.

The legendary composer will create new original music for the upcoming Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi series, says Variety.com. Reports say he has crafted the musical signature for the series but does note if he’ll score the six individual episodes. Variety notes that Williams “recorded last week with a Los Angeles orchestra under tight security.”

There’s no doubt that John Williams is one of the most beloved and well-respected composed in the industry. Williams won an Oscar for the first Star Wars film in 1977 and received nominations for five of the sequels, the most recent being in 2019 for The Rise of Skywalker.

Also of interest with this news is the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi will be Williams’ first weekly dramatic series score since Amazing Stories in 1985. He has also crafted tunes for some PBS series and Olympics themes.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi sees Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader) joined in the cast by the returning Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), as well as Star Wars newcomers Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, and Benny Safdie.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 25th.
