Marvel’s Kevin Feige promises Kang the Conqueror will bring “tonal diversity” and “real conflict” to the MCU

January 17, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror is something of a paradigm shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We all know it, and now Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has confirmed the upcoming Kang dominance.

Feige knows precisely what to say to hype up an upcoming Marvel project, speaking to Empire Magazine in a new interview, the MCU mastermind offered up some very interesting information about the Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania villain and his future in the MCU.

First, Feige says that as they enter the Multiverse Saga, it was a simple choice to bring Kang along for the ride. “He is the obvious choice as you’re dealing with the Multiverse. Kang allowed us to do a new kind of Big Bad. He’s a different type of villain, warring amongst themselves as much as he’s warring with our heroes,” says Feige.

He adds to that, describing how we are just touching the surface: “Kang’s a very powerful person, but when we meet him, he’s in a position where he needs to get that power back. He has a ship and a device that would allow him to go anywhere and anywhen he wants if he can get it online. If only he had access to genius scientists with Pym particles.”

Feige also describes how formulating Kang was a group effort, with Jonathan Majors’ character feeling like a team effort. “I met with the Loki team first. Then Peyton came on, and we had our chat for the film. He gave me a few reference points – Alexander The Great, things like that,” says the executive.

He continues, “Kang adds tonal diversity, real conflict, and real friction. You’re being introduced to a new vibration in the MCU. There’s conflict – not just mano-a-mano, not just hero and villain, but ‘your way of life’ and ‘my way of life.’ I’m coming for it. We’re in a battle here.”

We’ll next get to see Kang in action when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens in February.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet Van Dyne), Randall Park (Jimmy Woo), Corey Stoll (Darren Cross/Yellowjacket), Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang), Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror), Bill Murray (Krylar), and William Jackson Harper.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set for release on February 17th, 2023.
