Spider-Man: Freshman Year undergoes title change and will take place in an alternate Marvel universe

December 12, 2023 by Ricky Church

It has been a long time since we’ve had any kind of update on Spider-Man: Freshman Year, the animated series Marvel announced just over two years ago that was said to explore the early days of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man before his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. However, the series has now undergone a title change while confirming the series will in fact take place in an alternate Marvel universe instead of the MCU.

The animated series has now been titled Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and will premiere sometime in 2024. The confirmation of its alternate universe status clears up a lot of confusion as Marvel announced last year at SDCC the series will feature numerous characters who had not yet been introduced to Spider-Man prior to his Civil War debut, including Norman Osborn, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and more. This was especially confusing as that announcement was made long after Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Holland’s Peter did not know Osborn or Octopus and only met their alternate selves from the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.

The voice cast of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man so far includes Hudson Thames as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who voiced the hero in the first season of What If…?, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Grace Song as Nico Minoru, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, Kari Wahlgren as Aunt May and Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn. Additionally, Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, though obviously will be a different Daredevil than the one we’ve seen from the Netflix series and his MCU appearance.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will also see the inclusion of other Spider-Man and Marvel characters such as Harry Osborn, Doctor Strange, Amadeus Cho, Rhino, Scorpion, Speed Demon and Tarantula.
