Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil casts Severance and True Detective stars

October 4, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Already one of the most intriguing films in pre-production, Sony Pictures and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot has ratcheted up the interest by adding Severance’s Zach Cherry and True Detective’s Kali Reis to the cast.

Per The Hollywood Reporter the two breakout stars will join Austin Abrams, who was a standout in Zach Cregger’s $265 million grossing Weapons, in a brand new horror set in the world of the decades-old Capcom videogame. Twisted Metal actor Johnno Wilson has also been added to the cast.

Using a tactic that has served Cregger’s Barbarian and Weapons well, plot details are being kept well under wraps, but it is reported that Cherry will play a scientist in a Raccoon City hospital, while Reis will take on the role of an ex-military character that was originally written for a male actor. Wilson’s role remains a mystery.

Cregger will start shooting in October from a script written along with Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapters 3 and 4). Their take on the material is said to veer away from any previous adaptations of Resident Evil, and will instead be a love letter to the 1996 game, but with a completely new set of characters.

THR also unveiled a set of key words relating to the movie: hapless courier, mysterious package, mutated creatures, corporate conspiracy. We’ll have to wait until September 18, 2026 to find out what they mean.

Let us know what you think of this casting and whether you’re looking forward to Cregger’s take on a franchise that, let’s be honest, hasn’t really delivered on the potential of the videogame, by heading over to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
