This won’t come as much of a surprise given that they already have four of the top five highest-grossing movies of the year in Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, Finding Dory and The Jungle Book but The Walt Disney Company has announced that it has had its biggest-ever year at the worldwide box office with $5.85 billion by November 1st.
“For the second year in a row, The Walt Disney Studios has reached a new high at the box office thanks to an absolutely stellar collection of releases from Disney, Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm,” said Alan Horn, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “This success is a testament to the refined talent and innovative work the entire studio team puts into making these world-class cinematic experiences.”
The record for the biggest-ever year at the global box office belongs to Universal, which grossed $6.89 billion last year thanks to the likes of Fast & Furious 7, Jurassic World and Minions. However, Disney has Marvel’s Doctor Strange rolling out in cinemas around the world, and with Moana and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story still to come, it’s only a matter of time before that record is broken.
