Hugh Jackman rejects possibility of a Wolverine/Deadpool team-up, is ready to see another actor as Logan

February 23, 2017 by Samuel Brace

With the much anticipated arrival of the latest X-Men film, Logan, only a short time away, and with reviews for the Wolverine spin-off being rather impressive, talk about Fox’s two favourite R-rated heroes Wolverine and Deadpool teaming up has once again has ramped up.

It seems like it would be a sure thing for the studio, with the tepid response to X-Men: Apocalypse perhaps keeping events smaller and focusing on arguably the franchises’ two most successful characters is a good idea.

Hugh Jackman however disagrees and is adamant that Logan is his last hurrah as Wolverine.  He spoke about his opposition to the possibility in a Facebook Live interview, answering the team up question as follows:

“No, and Ryan Reynolds is currently sleeping outside my house. [Laughs] Look, if that movie had appeared 10 years ago, probably a different story, but I knew two and a half years ago that this was the last one. The first call I made was to [Logan director James Mangold]. I said, ‘Jim, I got one more shot at this,’ and as soon as Jim came up with the idea and we worked on it, I was never more excited. But, it feels like the right time. Deadpool, go for it man, do your thing. You don’t need me”.

While this may disappoint fans, you never want too much of a good thing. They seem to finally have gotten Wolverine right so what better way to end Jackman’s tenure.

This of course doesn’t mean Fox can’t recast the role, piggybacking off the success of Logan, using what makes it work and trying to rework it into future X-Men and Deadpool team ups.

This doesn’t seem likely in the short term, and it’s more probable that they will leave Wolverine alone for a while after Jackman’s departure – and Jackman also addressed the possibility of another actor taking over as Logan in an interview with the New York Times:

“The character will go on. Someone else will play it, for sure. [I’m at peace with that], unless Daniel Day-Lewis plays him and wins the Oscar — then I might have a little problem.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and March 3rd in North America.
