Charlie Cox on how The Defenders fit together as a team

August 17, 2017 by Jordan Jones

It’s been a few years since Marvel and Netflix began experimenting with an expanded universe on their streaming platform. Daredevil was met with critical acclaim in its first season, with Luke Cage and Jessica Jones not too far behind (sorry Iron Fist). Now, just like its big-screen brother, the Marvel Netflix-Verse is about to come together in the form of The Defenders.

At this point, we know quite a bit about the show from photos, interviews, trailers, etc., and today we can add some further insight to that list as Daredevil actor Charlie Cox sat down with Den of Geek to discuss the team dynamic, and how each character reacts to the show’s central conflict: “The Hand”.

“Now Danny and Matt have seen it. They’ve experienced it, and as hard as it is to explain, we know it exists because we’ve been there,” states Cox. “Jessica and Luke don’t have that. Initially at least, the role for Matt and Danny is quite similar. They’re the ones that have to bring the other two up-to-date and explain how serious this situation is and how you can’t just walk away from it and how dangerous these people are and what they’re capable of, blah blah blah. So that was kind of our role.”

Having Danny Rand, and Matt Murdock take the lead on the show is a wise idea. One: Daredevil is (arguably) the strongest show so far, and two: Iron Fist needs to win fans over. Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage live in smaller worlds right now in their own shows, and it will be really cool to see those worlds collide/ expand on The Defenders.

“Marvel’s The Defenders” follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

The Defenders will hit Netflix on August 18th 2017, with Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Scott Glenn (Stick), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing) and Elodie Yung (Elektra) appearing alongside Sigourney Weaver as the villain, Alexandra.
