It’s a sentiment that many a fan will likely share, but Chris Hemsworth has revealed that he “was really bored with Thor” coming off the 2013 Phase Two sequel Thor: The Dark World, before Taika Waititi came on board to revamp the God of Thunder for Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
“I wasn’t stoked with what I’d done in Thor 2,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “I was a little disappointed in what I’d done. I didn’t think I grew the character in any way, I didn’t think I showed an audience something unexpected and different. And then when Ragnarok came along, out of my own frustration of what I had done, and this is not on any other director or anyone, this was my own performance. I really wanted to break the mould.”
“I said this to Taika and I think the conversation we had was, I said ‘I’m really bored of Thor.’ And he said, ‘Yeah I’m really bored of Thor, too.’ And then we decided not to be bored and any time that feeling came into play, we’d go in a different direction,” he continued. “We just dismantled the character, we wanted to have him be a little more unpredictable, we wanted him to be in a different set of circumstances than he’d been in before, and also have the humor come through.”
Since Waititi’s Ragnarok, we’ve seen Hemsworth back as Thor for both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and he’s back again next month, reuniting with Waititi on Thor: Love and Thunder. That will mark his eighth appearance as the God of Thunder, and the actor has briefly addressed his potential MCU future in an interview with Wired, stating that:
“The last one I shot was Thor: Love and Thunder and it might be my last Marvel movie, I don’t know. It was a wild and fun and wacky experience, as all Taika Waititi movies are. Played that character for ten, eleven, years now, and each time it’s been new and exciting, and this was no exception to that. It felt very fresh and it felt like we were trying something we hadn’t tried before. I was, in Taika’s words, I think a wacky, wild, romantic comedy set in space.”
