Having become the third-biggest release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe last week, director James Gunn’s space opera Guardians of the Galaxy has now overtaken the global box office haul of Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past to become the highest grossing comic book movie of 2014. Guardians has amassed $752.6 million around the world since its release in August, leaving it third only to Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.087 billion) and Maleficent ($757.4 million) in terms of the year’s highest earners. For comparison, Days of Future Past earned $746 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier $714.1 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $709 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy sees James Gunn directing a cast that includes Chris Pratt (The LEGO Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C.
