Lucy Liu joins Shazam: Fury of the Gods as villain Kalypso

April 12, 2021 by Ricky Church

Another villain is will torment Billy Batson a.k.a. Shazam as Lucy Liu (Elementary) has joined the sequel as Kalypso, the sister of Helen Mirren’s Hespera. The film sees David F. Sandberg returning to the director’s chair alongside stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi, who play Billy and his superhero alter-ego Shazam.

Like Hespera, Kalypso has no direct reference from DC Comics and is seemingly an original creation for the film. In Greek mythology though Hespera and Kalypso are the daughters of Atlas, one of the gods who grants some of his power to the gods’ chosen hero and bearer of Shazam’s powers. The letters in Shazam all stand for legendary figures from which give him his powers. Solomon is the wisdom; he poses Hercules’ strength, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, Achilles is the character’s courage, and Mercury is the speed.

In response to the news, Sandberg posted on Twitter his own cheeky version of the announcement, which seems to hint things may not turn out well for Shazam or Levi…

Shazam: Fury Of The Gods sees Asher Angel returning as the teenage Billy Batson, and Zachary Levi playing his adult superhero counterpart Shazam. West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler has also joined the film in a still undisclosed role. The film is set to hit theaters in June 2023.
