From the series’ first announcement, fans of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s K-2SO have been eager to see the character’s inclusion inclusion Star Wars: Andor.
Sadly, the fan-favorite droid, voiced by Alan Tudyk, has not appeared in any marketing for the upcoming first season, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter head writer Tony Gilroy has explained the lack of the signature droid that helped made Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor so beloved – as well as teasing his eventual arrival.
“We’re starting him [Andor] so far away from the person who would know how to – or be motivated to – reprogram an Imperial droid… From a storytelling point of view, there are multiple reasons. I would say, ‘Wait and see.’ It’s a story we are eager to tell. It’s difficult to carry an Imperial droid around with you and not draw all kinds of attention. It’s a difficult piece of luggage. When we do it, we’ll do it in a spectacular fashion as opposed to presenting it and ignoring it, or presenting it or hiding it, or the bad versions we would have been forced to do.”
Meanwhile, speaking at Disney+’s Television Critics Association press day this week (via Deadline), Gilroy detailed the roadmap for the show’s two-season arc and how it will ultimately cover the five year period directly leading into Rogue One:
“We are covering one year in our first 12 episodes, that we’ve completed, in fact we’re finishing our final mix on [episode] 12 tomorrow. We are going to do another 12 episodes starting in November and the organizing principle for shooting is that we do blocks of three, so last year we were looking at the difficulty of doing five years, which seemed like it would take us the next 30 years.”
“The answer elegantly presented itself; we’re going to take our four blocks of three [episodes] in the second half of the show and each block is going to represent another year closer. We really get to take the formative forging of Cassian Andor in the first 12 episodes and then we get to take that organism that we’ve built up and run it through the next four years in a really exciting narrative fashion.”

The “Andor” series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.
Star Wars: Andor stars Diego Luna, who is reprising his Rogue One role as Cassian Andor, Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrara, and Adria Arjona (6 Underground), Denise Gough (The Kid Who Would Be King), Kyle Soller (101 Dalmatian Street), Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl), Ben Miles (The Crown), Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), and Robert Emms (His Dark Materials).
Star Wars: Andor will premiere on Disney+ on September 21st.
