Will Black Adam wake up the box office with projected $70 million opening?

October 5, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Black Adam is possibly the hero the United States box office needs this fall. If industry projects are anything to go by, Dwayne Johnson and everyone involved can be delighted at the introduction of a new era for DC.

The Dwayne Johnson-led superhero film is set to debut anywhere between $70 million to $75 million in its domestic debut over the Oct. 21-23 weekend. Some sources say the opening could be higher; even October is often kind to edgier superhero fare like Venom (which opened at $80 million in October 2018).

If the estimates of around $70 million still seem low, some industry projectors are worried that the long-term pandemic recovery mode is still a factor. If this opening does happen, it will mark the biggest for Johnson’s career outside of his appearance in the Fast & Furious franchise. Black Adam is also his first foray into superhero movies, so the curiosity around that could drive up interest even more.

Still, given the impressive openings for The Batman and Thor: Love & Thunder, it’s safe to say that superhero movies still make a splash when they debut. And Dwayne Johnson has been quite the one-man press tour for the film. From making rare SDCC appearances to stoking rumors of landing Henry Cavill as Superman again, the actor/producer knows this project is crucial to DC Films and his career.
