The Week in Spandex – Logan reviewed, Thanos’ role in Infinity War, Phase Three concept art, Mel Gibson for Suicide Squad 2, The Batman director woes

February 18, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…Marvel has given us another peek at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this week with the release of a new TV spot featuring some previously unseen footage [see here], while we also got some promo artwork featuring Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot [see here], along with a peek at Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet, albeit in Hasbro action figure form [see here]…

…And speaking of toys, we also got a look at Funko’s Pop! Vinyl figures for Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which include Spider-Man in his Tony Stark-designed suit, his homemade prototype, and his Peter Parker civvies, as well as the villain The Vulture; check out the promo images here…

…A rumour has surfaced this week suggesting that Captain Marvel will start production in January 2018 in Atlanta (which matches up with its planned March 2019 release date), while screenwriter Nicole Perlman has spoke about scripting Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie, and Brie Larson discussed the “great responsibility” she feels taking on the role of Carol Danvers: “I feel a great responsibility. I have so many conversations with fans about the universe and this character in particular. I’m grateful for social media for that, actually – it’s such a great way to connect with people, to understand what it is they love about this character, what it is they hope to see. Where this character’s at in the comic books is such an inspiring space, right now. I’m so grateful to be part of it…”

…It is perhaps a little surprising that Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanov didn’t beat Carol Danvers to a solo movie, but Johansson believes we will get to see a Black Widow movie at some point in time: “We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it. It needs its own style and its own story, and there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it…”

…We may also get to see a Namor the Sub-Mariner movie a lot earlier than expected, as rumours have surfaced this week claiming that Marvel is gearing up to go into production on a Namor project in Hawaii. Details are scarce, as in non-existent, and we don’t even know for sure that it is a movie; some speculation online has suggested that it could be the secret ABC TV project from John Ridley…

…Over to the small screen side of the MCU now and with production underway on Marvel and Hulu’s Cloak & Dagger TV series, we got our first look at our two leads Aubrey Joseph (The Night Of) and Olivia Holt (Kickin’ It) – who are portraying Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen – posing together on set (albeit out of costume) [see here], while Marvel also filled out the supporting cast with the addition of Andrea Roth (Rescue Me, Blue Bloods), Gloria Reuben (ER, Mr. Robot), Miles Mussenden (Bloodline, Queen Sugar), Carl Lundstedt (Grey’s Anatomy, Conviction), James Saito (Life of Pi, The Devil’s Advocate) and J.D. Evermore (True Detective, The Walking Dead). You can find out who each of them are playing here…

…You can find Danny Hale’s review of this past Tuesday’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. here, while ABC has also released a promo, poster and two clips from this coming Tuesday’s fifteenth episode ‘Self Control’ [see here and here]…

…A new photo from the set of Netflix’s The Defenders arrived online this week, featuring Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) and Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) all smiles together on the New York subway; check it out here…

…There’s been more bad news for the DC Extended Universe this week, as Warner Bros. is now losing directors before they’ve even signed on the dotted line. Yes, after offering Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, War for the Planet of the Apes) the job of replacing Ben Affleck in the director’s chair for The Batman just last week, it’s now been reported that Reeves has broken off negotiations after failing to reach a deal. Apparently it’s possible that talks will resume once “heads cool”, or Warner could turn to another of its two contenders in Ridley Scott (Prometheus) or Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe). However, the studio will be pressing ahead with its plans, as it is “intent on making the movie no matter what as the Batman franchise has proven to bigger than one person.” Although if the latest rumours suggesting that Ben Affleck wants out of the DCEU entirely prove true, that might make things a little more difficult…

…Whether the above rumour is true or not, Affleck will be back in the cape and cowl this November for Justice League, and Zack Snyder has shared a behind-the-scenes image from the DC ensemble teasing a Dark Knight action sequence [watch it here], while DC Collectibles also unveiled its Justice League movie statues for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg [see here]…

…Laurence Fishburne has revealed that he won’t be reprising his role as Perry White in Justice League, while he also shared some thoughts on the criticism levied towards Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: “They asked me to come for a day, but I couldn’t work it out, schedule-wise. And really, what do you need the newspaperman in Justice League for? You want to see the Flash. You want to see Aquaman. You want to see Wonder Woman. You want to see the Lantern. We’ve been waiting 35 years for these [characters] to show up on the screen. What were they doing over there? Marvel has been kicking their ass. This is the comic-book geek in me, who has a collection of comic books. I’ve been waiting to see these people on-screen forever…”

…Regular DC animation director Jay Oliva has also been chatting about his storyboard work on Batman v Superman, and in particular the Nightmare sequence, revealing that the Parademons were a late addition to the script; you can read Oliva’s comments on Batman v Superman, Justice League and Wonder Woman here…

…Click below to continue on for Suicide Squad 2, Shazam, Aquaman, Batman Begins, Green Lantern Corps, Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Black Lightning, Powerless, The LEGO Batman Movie, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and more…
