The Week in Spandex – X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants, Avengers: Infinity War, Justice League, The Batman, Aquaman, The Incredibles 2 and more

December 9, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…Whatever happens with the future of the DCEU, we do know we’re getting Aquaman next December, and this week we got our first official image of Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry from the James Wan-directed solo movie…

…Shazam also appears to be on track to start production early in the New Year, and this week has brought another casting announcment with Jack Dylan Grazer (It) set to portray Freddy Freeman, the best friend of Billy Batson (Asher Angel). Meanwhile, leading man Zachary Levi has said that he believes Shazam can be the DC answer to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: “James Gunn and the gang killed it. It brought so much heart and humor and yeah, I think it was kind of like this dark horse that took everybody by storm and I think Shazam kind of has the possibility to do that because Shazam’s not, for all intents and purposes, not Supes, it’s not Batman, it’s not Wonder Woman, it’s not what most of the people [expect]…”

…In other DCEU-related news, Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) has expressed his interest in portraying Dick Grayson in the Nightwing movie [read his comments here], Guillermo del Toro has ruled out a return for Justice League Dark [read his comments here], and despite spending the past year teasing his casting as Green Lantern, Armie Hammer has now said he’s not got any interest in taking on a superhero role [read his comments here]…

…Be sure to read Martin Carr’s review of the Supergirl season three midseason finale ‘Reign’ here, and take a look at a promo for January 15th’s next episode ‘Legion of Superheroes’ here…

…Jessie Robertson has reviewed the winter finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ‘Beebo the God of War’, and you can read that here, while you may also want to watch a promo for the midseason premiere ‘Daddy Darhkest’, which features the return of Matt Ryan’s John Constantine. Meanwhile, The CW has also announced that Legends and Supergirl will be sharing the Monday night timeslot from January, with Supergirl airing return from its midseason break on January 15th, airing for four weeks before going on another break to accommodate the second half of Legends’ third season and returning for its own final run of episodes on April 16th…

…Jessie has also reviewed the winter finale of The Flash ‘Don’t Run’, which you can read here, and you can find a promo for January’s midseason premiere episode here…

…You can find Jessie’s review of Arrow’s winter finale ‘Irreconcilable Differences’ here, while Stephen Amell has followed up his recent Ring of Honor wrestling appearance by stating that he hopes to have the Bullet Club stable making a guest appearance in the show: “I’m trying to get those guys to come out to one of these shows, as a group. I think that would be amazing. Those guys are great. Matt and Nick and Kenny and Cody being the main guys I’ve been able to hang out with. I appreciate anyone that does something in an entrepreneurial spirit. Those guys are really paving their own way. I mean, we would decimate them in one episode. They would be the group that we would foil in act one, and then figure out what the real problem was. If Sampson was to come back on the show, it would only make sense that he would be surrounded by his group of Bullet Club friends…”

…With Black Lightning set to premiere next month, The CW released a new trailer for its latest DC Comics adaptation which gives us another look at Cress Williams’ titular superhero in action; check it out here…

…We’re still yet to get details of a premiere date, but Syfy has released a brief new teaser promo for its upcoming Superman prequel series Krypton, and you can watch it here…

…Read Martin Carr’s reviews of Gotham season 4’s tenth episode ‘Things That Go Boom’ here and eleventh episode ‘Queen Takes Knight’ here, and take a look at a promo for the midseason premiere’s ‘Pieces of a Broken Mirror’ here…

…With HBO and Damon Lindelof now in pre-production on their planned Watchmen TV series, WWE Superstar John Cena sparked speculation that he’s been casting in the show by posting images of Doctor Manhattan to social media. Of course, it’s possible that he’s just lobbying for the part, or showing his appreciation for Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ work…

…LEGO Batman fans may want to check out the official promotional images for the second wave of The LEGO Batman Movie minifigures, which we have for you here…

…Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 got a first look image this week [see here], while returning voice actress Holly Hunter spoke about Elastigirl’s expanded role in the hotly-anticipated animated sequel: “Helen’s appetite for adventure comes to the fore. Whereas before, she was driven to become Mrs. Incredible out of necessity, where she went into it to save her husband, I think this time she really meets her own ambition head-on. The ambition of being an adventure is something that we get to explore… She throws down the gauntlet in this one. It’s so much fun to see a woman luxuriating in those two arenas, because women have for so many generations been brought up to not be ambitious or to not be competitive, and it’s fun to see Helen basking in those two arenas in much the same way that we give men license to do…”

…And finally, cinema’s first out gay superhero returns this January with the theatrical debut of Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel, the follow-up to the groundbreaking and lighthearted superhero movie Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes; check out the trailer, poster and official synopsis here.
