Comic Book Review – Assassin’s Creed: Conspiracies #1

Calum Petrie reviews Assassin’s Creed: Conspiracies #1…

It has been a little while since my last venture into the extended Assassin’s Creed universe, but I will admit I tend to enjoy the story in the comics more than the games recently. There is something about only investing 10/15 minutes at a time into a comic instead of the 30/40 hours to work through the game.

Assassin’s Creed: Conspiracies kicks off with a whole new character and during the period in time when WWII is at its height. The newest Assassin we are introduced to is Eddie Gorm, a former Naval officer and Docker in London during the early days of the Second World War.

Before I jump into the story summary, the first thing I noticed is that this has an outstanding art style. The mature art work was a great variation for the more childish Locus story arc, this puts it very much in the same vein as other video game adaptations such as the Dishonored series. The art style present reflects a more mature theme and underlines the severity of the issues tackled in this 51 page issue. This alone should grab readers attention and long time fans have been crying out for a WWII themed storyline.

The story is certainly not happy go lucky, with issue #1 spanning over a few years as we see the early to final days of WWII and the eternal battle the Templars and Assassin’s played in this era.

Eddie is a more likeable character than is usually represented with the protagonists in the comic series, his back story and motivations show conflict within himself. His development through the issue is compelling and I know I was extremely engrossed with the story.

The issue wraps with a typical cliffhanger to draw you into the next chapter, which I will very much be looking forward to as issue #1 was certainly a page turner.
