The Week in Spandex – Justice League, Marvel vs DC, Aquaman, Flashpoint, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, The Punisher, Disney’s Fox takeover and more

…Before we get to Avengers: Infinity War, we do have one more MCU movie to look forward to with February’s Black Panther, and this week has brought us a look at a theater standee [see here] along with character posters featuring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross and Winston Duke as M’Baku [see here], while we also got some promotional images for Funko’s upcoming Pop! Vinyl, Dorbz and Hero Plushies figures [check them out here]…

…It remains to be seen if and when Spider-Man’s nemesis J. Jonah Jameson will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, but when he does, original Spider-Man trilogy (and upcoming Justice League) star J.K. Simmons has revealed that he’d be happy to reprise the role: “I never say never. Obviously I had an amazing time with Sam Raimi on those movies, and Tobey Maguire and everybody. That was a great great time, and huge for my career and my life, and just pure fun. If there were an opportunity to revisit that…. I don’t know, though… how old is Spider-Man going to be if J. Jonah Jameson is this old..?”

…In other Spidey-related news, the first set photos and video from Sony’s Venom solo movie have arrived online, giving us a look at Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock; check them out here and here…

…Back to the MCU now and with The Punisher set to hit Netflix this coming Friday, Ben Robins has ranked all Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, Ray Stevenson and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castles [read his feature here], while Alex Moreland caught up with star Amber Rose Revah, who discussed her role as Dinah Madini [read it here]. Meanwhile, in other Netflix news, Vincent D’Onofrio has revealed that he has begun prep work for his Kingpin return in Daredevil season 3…

…With Inhumans now finished, ABC has kicked off the promotion for the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ahead of its December 1st premiere with the release of a trailer and promo, both of which you can find here…

…It looks like we’ll soon be able to add another live-action show to the Marvel Television slate, which will air as part of Disney’s new streaming service along with series based on Star Wars, High School Musical and Monsters, Inc.…

…With less than two weeks to go until the season premiere of Runaways, Hulu has released a new banner for the upcoming Marvel series [see here], as well as character posters featuring Gert (Ariela Barer), Molly (Allegra Acosta), Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Nico (Lyrica Okano), Chase (Gregg Sulkin), and Karolina (Virginia Gardner) [find them here]…

…Over at Fox and the studio has released an illustrated Thanksgiving poster for Deadpool 2, which riffs on American Artist Norman Rockwell’s ‘Freedom from Want’ painting, and sees Merc with a Mouth joined around the Thanksgiving table by Cable, Domino, Weasel, Colossus, Blind Al, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Vanessa and Dopinder; take a look at the poster here…

…Could the X-Men and the Fantastic Four be heading back to Marvel Studios? Well, the possibility seemed to take a huge step closer this week when it was announced that Disney has held talks about acquiring 20th Century Fox and its stable of movie properties. Before you get too excited, subsequent reports have said that talks have broken down, and Fox is likely to be meeting with other interested parties. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Ryan Reynolds from taking to Twitter to ponder Deadpool’s future, while Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld also spoke out about the potential deal, urging Fox not to go through with the takeover…

…As filming continues on M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Split follow-up Glass, this week brought us a first set photo from the sequel featuring Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price [see here], along with a video which sees Bruce Willis’ David Dunn doing battle with James McAvoy’s The Beast [see here]…

…X-Men star Ellen Page has signed on for a lead role in Netflix’s TV adaptation of the Gerard Way comic book The Umbrella Academy, which follows follows the dysfunctional family of the Hargreeves, a group of young superheroes that come together in order to solve their father’s mysterious murder. Page will play Vanya Hargreeves, a.k.a. The White Violin, the black sheep of the superhero family with no supernatural abilities. Due to her lack of abilities, she’s insecure about where she fits within the family and searches for her place in the world. Gerard Way will executive produce the series alongside Fargo’s Steven Blackman, who serves as showrunner, while The Exorcist’s Jeremy Slater has written the pilot…

…And finally, it has been announced that Amazon has snapped up Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s adaptation of the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic book series The Boys, ordering an eight-episode season to arrive in 2019. “In a landscape saturated with superhero shows, The Boys is the next evolution in this popular genre,” said Amazon’s Head of Scripted Series Sharon Tal Yguado. “With Eric Kripke, Evan, Seth and Original Film all behind this series, we are excited to adapt this popular comic, from the visionary minds of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, for television.” The official synopsis for the new series reads: “In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, The Boys centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as ‘the boys,’ who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.”
