The Week in Spandex – Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, The Defenders, The Punisher, Justice League, Wonder Woman 2, Deadpool 2, Batman and Harley Quinn sex scene

August 19, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…Netflix brought Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist together yesterday as the streaming service assembled The Defenders; you can read Luke Owen’s ‘4 Things We Learned from the First 4 Episodes of The Defenders’ here, as well as Ricky Church’s review of the first episode here and the second episode here., and you may also want to check out our exclusive interviews with costume designer Stephanie Maslansky here and makeup artist Sarit Klein here. Meanwhile, Marvel also released a final trailer [watch it here], a final final trailer [watch that one here], two brief new clips [watch them here], a cast featurette [watch it here] and a promo focussing on Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple [see here]…

…Coinciding with the arrival of The Defenders, we also got a first teaser trailer for Netflix’s next Marvel series The Punisher [watch it here], while Jon Bernthal also discussed the solo show, and how he wanted to ensure that Frank Castle didn’t come off as too heroic: “It’s an interesting predicament. To put [The Punisher] as the central character is interesting, I think that my big struggle with him is that one of my biggest kind of things that I’m always fighting for on set is, I always want to preserve the essence of Frank, and have the right and be bold enough to really turn my back on the audience, and not do things to win the audience’s favor, but rather stay true to the character and the essence of who he is,” said Bernthal. “So I think that’s the real challenge: being bold enough to not make him too heroic, at least ‘heroic,’ is important to me. That being said, I think there’s Frank Castle inside of everybody, I think being a father and being a husband, he’s a character that I deeply empathize with…”

…It was announced this week that David Tennant is reprising the role of Kilgrave for the second season of Jessica Jones, and while we’re not exactly sure how he’ll factor into the storyline given his fate in the season one finale, but some set photos have arrived online showing him with  Jessica (Krysten Ritter) and her friend Malcolm (Eka Darville); check those out here…

…We’re less than a fortnight away from the IMAX premiere of Marvel’s Inhumans, and this week has seen the release of a promo showcasing the members of the Royal Family [watch it here], along with a featurette which sees executive producers Scott Buck and Jeph Loeb and director Roel Reine discussing the show [see here]…

…In other Marvel TV news, Fantastic Four star Julian McMahon is set for a return to the Marvel universe, having signed on to play a mysterious character called Jonah in Hulu’s Runaways series, while two new rumoured casting breaks for Cloak & Dagger have surfaced online, seemingly for the roles of Father Francis Xavier Delgado and Detective Brigid O’Reilly; check them out here…

…Some very sad news from the set of Deadpool 2 this week, with stunt performer Joi ‘SJ’ Harris killed whilst performing a motorcycle stunt for the hotly-anticipated superhero sequel. Ryan Reynolds took to social media to pay tribute to Harris and express his sorrow over the tragic accident: “Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool. We’re heartbroken, shocked and devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them — along with each and every person she touched in this world…”

…It looks like Fox may have cast Dazzler in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and no, it’s not the long rumoured Taylor Swift. According to reports, Halston Sage (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, The Orville) is set to play Alison Blair in the latest instalment of the main X-Men series, which is currently in production in Montreal under director Simon Kinberg…

…Fantastic Four star Jamie Bell has been chatting about the disastrous 2015 reboot, stating that – like the majority of people in the world who’ve suffered through it – the cast of the movie were “bitterly disappointed” by the film: “There were several things on that movie I was clearly not privy to because I’m just an actor and I just do my stuff on set. But with something like that, everything starts with the best of intentions. A production begins with the idea to make something that’s unique and original and with integrity. I think the film really strived towards those goals. I don’t know what happened between the launch of the voyage and the arrival. I think we were all bitterly disappointed with that film. But that’s just the way it goes sometimes…”

…Four new character poster have arrived online for Fox’s upcoming X-Men series The Gifted featuring Polaris (Emma Dumont), Blink (Jamie Chung), Thunderbird (Blair Redford) and Eclipse (Sean Teale) [check them out here], and it has also been announced that Underworld’s Len Wiseman has joined the series as an executive producer, having directed the “key” second episode…

…Click below to continue on for Justice League, The Batman, Wonder Woman 2, Aquaman, Captain Marvel, Gotham, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batman and Harley Quinn, Batman vs. Two-Face, Hellboy, Quantum and Woody and more…
